Marcos Lozano Merchán

Between Classical Tradition and a Contemporary Vision.

Marcos Lozano (Madrid, 1990) situates his practice within a renewed tradition of European figurative painting, approaching the language of the Old Masters through the intellectual and existential concerns of the present.

Rooted in the pictorial legacy of Velázquez, Rembrandt, Titian, Zurbarán, and Goya, Lozano combines rigorous technique with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. His paintings examine beauty, memory, myth, identity, human vulnerability, and transcendence, using the figure not simply as a subject, but as a vehicle for reflection on the human condition.

His practice is characterized by a sustained interest in the relationship between image and meaning. Classical references are neither reproduced nor treated nostalgically; instead, they are reinterpreted as living structures through which questions of mortality, spirituality, desire, and knowledge can be articulated.

Lozano’s work has been presented internationally across Europe, Asia, and the United States, including projects in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei, Madrid, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Geneva, Brussels, and Milan. His participation in the bicentennial celebrations of the National Gallery in London, in an exhibition organized with Moretti Fine Art, marked a significant moment within his international trajectory. He also collaborates with Tang Contemporary Art.

Among his most ambitious institutional projects is Storm Cube, a monumental installation developed for the Louvre Museum in Paris and centered on the figure of Noah.

Between historical memory and contemporary experience, Lozano’s painting proposes a space where tradition becomes a means of inquiry. His work ultimately considers painting as more than representation: a way of approaching what remains unresolved in the human experience.
