Magical Hyperrealism - WooJae Jeong
Step into the extraordinary world of WooJae Jeong, a Seoul-based painter whose breathtaking hyperrealism transforms everyday urban scenes into quiet, dreamlike encounters. Born in Korea in 1983, WooJae Jeong combines meticulous technical precision with magical realism, creating paintings in which adolescent girls and animals of impossible scale inhabit spaces that feel at once familiar and otherworldly.
WooJae Jeong received his BA in Fine Art from Chugye University of the Arts and his MA in Fine Art from Hong-Ik University. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions internationally, including Afterglow at Friedrichspontone in New York in 2023 and Afterglow at Albemarle Gallery in London in 2022, as well as numerous exhibitions in Seoul at venues including Arte K-Seoul, Everyart, and E.LAND Gallery. His paintings have also been exhibited at major international art fairs such as Art Miami, Art New York, KIAF, and Art Palm Beach.
At the heart of WooJae Jeong’s artistic practice is an exploration of emotion, identity, and human connection. His adolescent figures exist in an undefined space between childhood and adulthood, reflecting the contemporary individual’s ongoing search for identity and belonging. Alongside them, animals become powerful emotional counterparts, each carrying its own symbolic meaning. Dogs embody relationships and unconditional support; ornamental fish represent dreams and hope; cats symbolize independence and self-respect.
Through the carefully considered scale, position, gaze, and distance of his figures and animals, WooJae Jeong gives visible form to emotions that are often difficult to express. The extraordinary proportions of the animals disrupt the familiar logic of everyday spaces, creating a subtle tension between reality and imagination. What initially appears surreal becomes deeply human, revealing feelings of vulnerability, longing, companionship, uncertainty, and resilience.
Light, perspective, atmosphere, and silence play an equally important role in WooJae Jeong’s paintings. His meticulous compositions create a sense of stillness, allowing each scene to unfold slowly before the viewer. Rather than presenting a conventional narrative, WooJae Jeong creates moments suspended in time—quiet encounters in which the boundaries between the real and the imagined begin to dissolve.
The result is a body of work that is technically extraordinary yet deeply poetic. WooJae Jeong uses hyperrealism not simply to reproduce the visible world, but to reveal what lies beneath it. His paintings transform ordinary environments into psychological spaces where memory, emotion, and imagination coexist.
WooJae Jeong’s works are included in notable collections such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Mimesis Art Museum, and the E-Land Foundation for Arts & Culture, among others. WooJae Jeong has also received several awards and distinctions, including the Naver Grafolio Work of the Year in 2019.
