Today, we are proud to introduce an artist whose work does more than invite us to look—it challenges us to reflect: Carlos Cárdenas. We are especially pleased to finally feature his work on our cover and present an in- depth interview that offers a closer look at his artistic journey, his ideas, and the world behind his paintings.
Over the course of several decades, Carlos Cárdenas has developed a distinctive visual language deeply rooted in the human figure and in a critical examination of society. His characters, environments, and dystopian atmospheres explore themes of consumerism, isolation, hyperconnectivity, identity, and the contradictions of the world we live in.
His paintings combine remarkable technical precision with a strong conceptual foundation, transforming each work into much more than a visual representation. His scenes seem to suspend time, compelling us to look again at aspects of modern life that we often prefer to overlook. Beauty draws us in, while the underlying message encourages us to question what we are seeing.
One of the most compelling aspects of Cárdenas’s work is his ability to use the human figure as a mirror of society. With an extensive national and international career, including more than 120 group exhibitions, 11 solo exhibitions, major biennials, and numerous awards and distinctions in Mexico, Spain, Italy, and other countries, Cárdenas has established a strong and consistent artistic practice grounded in continuous research and reflection.
His international experience has allowed his work to engage with different artistic contexts while maintaining a clear and recognizable identity. From Mexico to Europe, his paintings communicate through a visual language that transcends geographical boundaries, making his work particularly relevant to an international audience.
