Interview with Ioanna Stefou
The work of Ioanna Stefou opens a quiet space between observation, emotion, and human presence. In this context, The Guide Artists presents her as the Artist of the Month, highlighting a body of work rooted in realism, sensitivity, and emotional depth.
Her practice explores the human figure as a space for communication, intimacy, and inner truth. Through carefully observed portraits, subtle expressions, and a refined use of light, Stefou creates images that invite stillness and contemplation, looking beyond physical resemblance to reveal what lies beneath the surface.
This selection reflects a curatorial focus on artists who combine technical discipline with emotional depth. In Ioanna Stefou’s work, realism becomes a quiet and intimate language, shaped by observation, presence, and sensitivity.
Issue 87 of The Guide Artists continues our April edition with a renewed focus on clarity, sensitivity, and the enduring power of figurative painting.
This special issue features Ioanna Stefou on the cover, an architect and painter based in Athens, Greece, whose work reflects a profound commitment to realism and the exploration of human nature. With a practice shaped by both classical discipline and contemporary awareness, Stefou approaches painting as a form of communication, creating portraits that seek to reveal the inner truth of her subjects with quiet intensity and precision.
Having worked as an architect for more than a decade, she gradually turned her full attention toward painting, deepening her path especially after her studies at the New York Academy of Art in 2014. Her work draws inspiration from everyday life and from the people around her, resulting in images that are both intimate and psychologically resonant. Alongside her figurative practice, she also paints landscapes, where her fascination with water and its inherent unpredictability opens new possibilities for experimentation in oil.
