A Dark Religion

Reflected relating the sensuality of the human body with the deepest spirituality, associating the physical with the mystical, evoking to traditional representations of the saints ecstasy.

He represents images as if they were virgins, with a golden halo around its heads, resembling Byzantine icons.
This are surrounded by that same combination between the mysterious, demonic, earthly and sensual, as if they were destined in purity to the destruction and decadence.

Dividing his work in “eros”, “psyche” and “human”, Saturno Buttò wants to make a journey through all the facets of the human being, from that sexual attraction and desire, to reflect its soul incorporating both the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind, finishing by the representation of the human being in its whole. All this, reflected in both versions of the book, invites to leave the prejudices behind, to think about those dark themes represented in the paintings, although with a small glimmer of hope behind all that darkness.

  • Inside the book, two texts can be read, one of them being the book's prologue and named as “Hidden Art”, introduce the book and welcoming to that “hidden work”.

  • Then, can be found a a text made by the book's editor and founder of The Guide Artists, Ramón A. Olivares, about the importance and meaning of this book for him.

The paintings that could be find in the book are perfect for all those who does not fear to face that discomfort that can suggest the work in the first place but, after confronting that setback, the artwork mesmerizes you and fulfill you with curiosity and mysticism, carrying to a self-reflection about the human condition and their darkest aspects.

It shows that physical and psychological decline, illustrating figures self-harming with instruments as blades or needles. In that way, the works are going against that desire of eternal life and to defeat death.

Additionally, he represents the weird behaviors of the human being, about all those sexual fetishes, which unites with that mysticism proper of his work.

In this way, the artist wants to represent all those taboos that represents the actual society, with the desire of being overcame. For this reason, it can be seen in his work, inside all that darkness that involves its paintings, a ray of hope. Thereby, when the spectators confronted that initial discomfort that could transmit the work and face that dark side of the human being, full with fears and insecurities,  could emerge stronger and more resistant from that confront.

Sometimes a bit disturbing, the tables challenge the viewer at times with their glances, at times with the discomfort they radiate, to put them to the test, to make them face all that incoherent combination of emotions they transmit and so that they can come to their own conclusions. So that, when the spectators confronted that initial discomfort that could transmit the work and face that dark side of the human being, full with fears and insecurities,  could emerge stronger and more resistant from that confront.
