THE DISCIPLINE OF SEEING
THE DISCIPLINE OF SEEING
In this other Special, we are proud to present on our cover one of the most talented artists we have had the opportunity to discover: Arthur Gain.
Based in Barcelona, Spain, Arthur is a self-taught oil painter whose diverse artistic journey has led him to develop a distinctive approach to representational painting. His work is characterized by a strong focus on observation, light, atmosphere, and the expressive possibilities of traditional oil painting.
Before dedicating himself fully to painting, Arthur pursued a successful career in commercial illustration and graphic design, later becoming a creative director in the advertising industry. However, during his time in Asia, his exploration of traditional Yoga and Buddhist meditation encouraged a deeper connection with his creative instincts and ultimately led him to discover his passion for representational art.
Arthur’s artistic practice is rooted in the dialogue between technique and perception. Through oil painting, he explores the subtle relationships between light, color, form, and emotion, creating works that combine a strong sense of realism with a deeply personal sensitivity.
His approach reflects both his background in visual communication and his dedication to the traditional language of painting. Rather than simply reproducing what he sees, Arthur seeks to capture the atmosphere and character within each subject, allowing technical precision and artistic interpretation to coexist.
With Arthur Gain on our cover, we celebrate an artist whose work demonstrates how observation, sensitivity, and a profound understanding of visual language can come together to create a powerful and contemporary expression of representational art.
In this new interview, we meet an artist whose journey from design and creative direction to figurative oil painting was shaped not by a conventional career decision, but by a profound desire for change, contemplation, and a different way of living.
After spending almost a decade in Southeast Asia immersed in Buddhist meditation and yoga, he gradually rediscovered his fascination with classical art, music, and drawing, allowing painting to enter his life organically. Today, his practice reflects that same sense of patience and attentiveness: an understanding of art not as a sudden moment of inspiration, but as a daily discipline built through curiosity, observation, and sustained practice.
Throughout the conversation, he reflects on the transition from digital art to oil painting, the technical discoveries that transformed his understanding of the medium, and the unique relationship that develops between artist and sitter when a portrait is painted from life. He also explores the influence of his background in visual communication, the importance of making work that can communicate across different formats, and the role of honesty in developing an authentic artistic voice.
At the heart of the interview is a simple but powerful idea: learning to see is itself a form of practice. Through painting, teaching, meditation, and everyday observation, the artist embraces the process rather than rushing toward a destination.
An insightful conversation about art, discipline, curiosity, presence, and the long journey of becoming an artist.
