Kaori Someya — Between the Visible and the Unspoken

In her new publication with The Guide Artists in Europe, Japanese artist Kaori Someya presents a vital selection of works that explore the experience of being a woman in contemporary Japanese society, viewed through the lens of traditional nihonga painting. With remarkable sensitivity and a deep historical awareness, Someya narratively deconstructs the emotional landscape many women navigate in a conservative culture—frustration, resignation, sorrow, and a quiet yet enduring anger.

Influenced by her mother, a kimono maker, and her training in traditional techniques such as byōbu (folding screens) and kakejiku (hanging scrolls), Someya’s work is rooted in the delicate balance between hare (the extraordinary) and ke (the everyday)—two essential pillars of Japanese aesthetic thought. She employs natural materials—minerals, metals, plants, insects—that, though never blended, coexist in harmony, embodying the spirit of nihonga and its reverence for the integrity of each element. Her compositions reflect a continual search to integrate tradition with contemporary modes of expression.

This publication serves as a meaningful bridge between East and West, offering readers an intimate visual and emotional journey into the world of an artist who turns painting into an act of resistance, remembrance, and transformation. A tribute to the imperfect beauty of what endures.
