Reflections of the Present: Akika Kurata’s Journey Through Art

This book provides a profound insight into the work of japanese artist Akika Kurata, who has dedicated her career to capturing the beauty of people in the present day, much like painters of the past depicted their own contemporaries. Kurata’s artistic journey began in 2014 when she created a drawing of her grandfather. What initially seemed like a simple technical exercise led her to reflect on the challenge of understanding and portraying the inner world and values of another generation.

Driven by this realization, Kurata produced the artwork “Sand Art Bottle,” where she uses visual effects to express deeper human emotions. Since then, her work has evolved, and she now focuses on portraying female friends of her generation, exploring and reflecting the shared experiences, feelings, and values of her time.

Throughout the book, Kurata guides us through her creative process and invites us to uncover the emotional and conceptual depth behind her artworks, which go beyond the visual to explore the human soul.
