THIERRY CARRIER

SOLITARY FIGURES IN SILENT LANDSCAPES

Thierry Carrier has built a deeply introspective body of work, defined by silence and an emotional tension that is difficult to fully name. His paintings place the viewer before solitary figures, suspended within bare landscapes, where gesture, gaze, and posture seem to contain a story that is never completely revealed.

Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse at a time when figurative painting occupied a marginal position within the French art scene, Carrier chose to remain faithful to an essential need: painting as a form of inner search. This commitment to image, body, and silence has given rise to a distinctive visual language, in which the human figure appears as an enigmatic, vulnerable, and almost monumental presence.

Marked in his youth by Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire, the artist develops an atmosphere with a strong cinematic resonance. His figures seem to inhabit a territory between memory, waiting, and uncertainty. Often depicted from low viewpoints, they acquire a hieratic quality, even when the subjects are young or childlike. This perspective intensifies their presence and turns each portrait into an image of profound psychological force.

In Thierry Carrier’s work, solitude is not presented as absence, but as a space of revelation. His figures do not seek to explain anything. They simply remain there, facing the landscape, time, and the viewer’s gaze, generating a subtle unease that becomes the very center of his pictorial strength.

Born in 1973 in Bort-les-Orgues, France, Thierry Carrier lives and works in Souillac, in the Lot region. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in France and internationally, including Norway, Denmark, London, San Francisco, Lisbon, and Munich. He is currently represented by H Gallery in Paris, where in March 2026 he presents his second solo exhibition, Land of Confusion. New works by the artist will also be presented at Art Paris Art Fair 2026 at the Grand Palais.
