Kevin Slaby - Curator´s Choice

KEVIN SLABY

Lincoln, Nebraska, United States

Born in Nebraska in 1966, Kevin Slaby is an American realist figurative painter whose work explores the strength, beauty, and presence of women through imaginative and often surreal visual narratives. Combining technical precision with a refined sense of storytelling, he constructs paintings that merge realism and imagination, transforming carefully observed details into atmospheric compositions rich in symbolism and emotional depth.

Largely self-taught, Slaby developed his artistic language through an intensive study of the Old Masters and leading contemporary realist painters. This foundation has shaped a practice defined by meticulous brushwork, luminous surfaces, and an exceptional level of detail that gives each work its distinctive presence and clarity.

Working from a fusion of photographic reference and imagination, Slaby develops highly detailed compositions that place female figures at the center of dreamlike and often cinematic environments. His work consistently emphasizes dualities such as strength and vulnerability, stillness and tension, realism and invention.

Over the years, his work has received increasing International recognition. In 2024, ne was elected to the International Guild of Realism (IGOR) and participated in the guild's inaugural exhibition of the year at T.H. Brennen Fine Art in Scottsdale, Arizona, where his painting steam Alley received the Best of Show distinction.

Kevin Slaby has also been featured on the cover of The Guide Artists, a milestone that reflects his growing presence within contemporary realist painting. We have had the privilege of presenting his work previously, and a special cover edition is currently in preparation for later this year.

Raised in the American Midwest, he grew up surrounded by the openness of rural life, where early interests such as motorcycle and auto racing played an important role in his formative years. As his path evolved, extensive international travel expanded his perspective and nurtured a growing appreciation for art and collecting. What began as collecting gradually became a deeper creative pursuit, first through photography and later through painting, where he found the freedom to construct images beyond the limits of documentation.

Today, he lives and works in Lincoln, Nebraska, continuing to develop a body of work defined by technical mastery, narrative precision, and a sustained exploration of the human figure as a central artistic subject.
