Julia Eichbauer
Julia Eichbauer (b. 1986) was born and raised in a small Austrian village near the Czech border. After completing high school, she devoted herself to languages and literature, studying Romance languages at the University of Graz. She later moved to Sicily, where she lived in Palermo for five years. She would later describe those years as a period of searching, and perhaps also
of “escaping.” During that time, and after returning to Austria, she worked in hospitality and customer service while spending much of her free time traveling throughout South America.
A decisive turning point came in 2022, when she attended a workshop with Robert Bodem at FIGURA, The Dutch Academy of Figurative Sculpture in Amsterdam. The experience led her to leave her job and dedicate herself fully to sculpture.
“My experience at FIGURA was magical. It’s one of those places where you immediately know you want to stay.”
A few months later, she returned to Amsterdam and enrolled in the sculpture program led by Sanne van Tongeren, a former instructor at the Florence Academy of Art. It was a beautiful yet fragile period in her life.
“It’s not easy to convince yourself in your late thirties that dedicating yourself to sculpture is the right decision. It definitely was, though.”
After nearly two years of studying anatomy and form, Eichbauer returned to Vienna, where she began experimenting with a wider range of materials. More recently, she has developed a particular fascination with ceramics, especially wood-fired work.
“Clay has always been my material, but instead of making molds and casting my work, as I was taught, I now can’t wait to experiment with glazes and oxides.”
“The human body is our most powerful instrument of expression, capable of communicating beyond words.”
