Interview with Halee Roth

Halee holds a degree in painting, though her style has been shaped as much by independent exploration as by
a close study of classical techniques. Over time, she has developed a visual language that feels both grounded and personal, guided by observation and a sensitivity to the emotional potential of color. Her work is driven by a quiet intention to cultivate hope, using light as both a visual
and expressive element. Through the human figure, she focuses on moments of stillness and presence, creating images that speak gently about inner strength and the subtle depth of human experience.

Halee Roth

Halee Roth is an artist who works from her studio surrounded by gardens and mountains, an environment that quietly permeates her creative vision. This close relationship with nature is not incidental but essential to her work, shaping a contemplative sensibility that is deeply attentive to the subtleties of human experience. Her art reflects a dual fascination with the natural world and the emotional complexity of people, merging both into a cohesive and expressive visual language.

Halee Roth earned her B.F.A. from Utah State University, where she specialized in painting and drawing with a focus on the human figure and art education. While her academic training provided a strong technical foundation, her artistic voice was truly shaped by experiences beyond the classroom. During her studies abroad in Germany, she encountered German Expressionism, whose emotional intensity and bold use of color left a lasting impact on her approach to painting. Later, her time living in India further expanded her sensitivity to color, light, and cultural atmosphere, deepening her use of expressive color as both a structural and emotional element in her work.

After completing her studies, she spent several years teaching art at the secondary level, instructing in ceramics, sculpture, drawing, and art history. This period not only strengthened her pedagogical practice but also enriched her understanding of artistic processes across multiple media.

In her current practice, the human figure remains central—used not merely as a subject but as a vehicle for introspection and connection. Her award-winning style develops through a balance of disciplined observation of classical techniques and ongoing experimentation inspired by both contemporary and historical artists. She creates compositions that carefully balance structure and spontaneity.

In her work, the figure often exists between vulnerability and resilience, suspended in a space of quiet emotional presence. Through restrained compositions where every gesture and tonal decision matters, Roth invites viewers not only to observe but to feel, reflect, and reconnect with a shared human experience.

Issue 85 of The Guide Artists will be released on March 30, featuring Halee Roth on the cover.

Halee’s practice is grounded in a focused exploration of the human figure, where gestural brushwork and compositional precision coexist in a balanced and intentional way. Her approach reflects a deep understanding of figurative painting, supported by a sensitive handling of color, light, and texture that brings both structure and atmosphere to each work. The result is a body of work that conveys emotional nuance while maintaining a strong visual coherence.
