The Season of Beginnings
JENNIFER GÓMEZ | Co-Founder The Guide Artists
When I was a child, September always carried a bittersweet flavor. On one hand, I was fascinated by autumn. I’ve always felt something special about this season: the golden light, the days slowly shortening, the perfect temperature that invites unhurried walks, the leaves falling as if the world were preparing to pause. There’s something deeply poetic in watching nature gradually transform into ochres, reds, and golds.
I can’t deny it, I’ve always been a hopeless romantic when it comes to this time of year.
But like many others, for years September also meant going back to school. That endless-Sunday feeling stretched out over days, the end of summer freedom, the pressure of starting all over again. A necessary beginning, yes, but often one that came with anxiety. Today, however, there’s no more back-to- school season. September has stopped being a threat and become a symbol of renewal. Because now I deeply enjoy my work, and that has completely changed my relationship with this month. I see it as a chance to begin new cycles, to imagine more ambitious projects, to discover art that moves me, and to meet artists who inspire me. September now fills me with energy, reconnecting me with that active and vibrant part of myself that often falls asleep in routine.
Still, allow me to pause this autumn reflection for a moment. Because while September may be about new beginnings, it’s also the perfect time to talk about what lies behind it all: the work.
At The Guide Artists, we work tirelessly. Behind every issue, every interview, every magazine or book, behind the website, social media, every curatorial and editorial decision, every exhibition, book signing, and distribution effort, there are only two of us. Two people who love art with all their being. Two people who decided to create and sustain an independent brand, not with big resources or a large infrastructure, but with a boundless passion that grows every day.
We know art doesn’t move forward on passion alone, and sustaining a project like this takes sacrifice, sleepless nights, difficult decisions, and a daily commitment that sometimes leaves us breathless. And while we do it with love, we also do it with rigor and professionalism. Because we believe art deserves a platform that respects, elevates, and supports it.
And yet, many times we face a discouraging landscape. Lack of recognition, misinformation, even disrespect and offensive comments that question the value of what we do. It’s hard to admit, but it’s real. Behind the romance and passion there’s also exhaustion, frustration, and moments when it’s hard to keep going. That’s why, from this space, we want to reaffirm the value of work. The value of artists, yes, but also the value of those who work so their art can reach others. Because creating art is an act of courage, but sustaining an independent art platform in these times is one too. We’re not asking for praise, but we are asking for respect. Because respect is the very least that should be expected when things are done with transparency, ethics, and passion.
Even so, it’s not all struggle. Fortunately, we have an incredible community, artists, readers, followers, who support us, who write with kindness, who believe in our mission and help us grow every day. To them, to you, we owe so much. You are the energy that keeps us going when we feel we can’t. You are part of this family we’ve built with so much effort and dedication.
So, thank you. Thank you for being here, for valuing, for sharing, for trusting. Thank you for making The Guide Artists a living, free, and ever-evolving space.
May this September bring new beginnings, new challenges, and new ways to celebrate what we love most: art.
