Dorielle Caimi (b. 1985) is an American oil painter living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her BFA in Painting, summa cum laude, from Cornish College of the Arts in 2010.
Caimi’s work has been exhibited internationally and has received recognition through a number of significant awards and distinctions. In 2015, she
was awarded the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award for work that “visually responds to painting in the 21st century,” juried by Franklin Sirmans of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 2019, she was selected as one of ten finalists for the $50,000 Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realists. In 2026, she was shortlisted for the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award, formerly known as the BP Portrait Award.
Her work is held in notable public and private collections, including the Miami University Permanent Art Collection, The Tullman Collection, the private collections of Ashley Longshore and Residente, and the permanent collection of the Muskegon Museum of Art.
Using figuration, vivid color, and symbolism, Caimi’s paintings employ humor and abrupt juxtapositions of bodies and objects to reexamine societal ideas surrounding women and illuminate contemporary life through the female gaze, psychology, and lived experience. Her figures are presented as fulfilled, profound, and complex, occupying important and powerful roles across every facet of society.
While the nude female figure remains prominent throughout her work, Caimi’s approach to nudity is less concerned with sexuality than with unapologetic openness and an awareness of the varied experiences of women. Through humor, tenderness, psychological depth, and visual tension, her paintings explore the complexities of identity, vulnerability, and the ways women are seen and understood.
Her practice continues to evolve through cohesive bodies of work that explore specific themes, including her current series, Imaginary Friends, in which she considers the inner worlds of women and imagines the presence of protective, guiding companions during moments of uncertainty, vulnerability, motherhood, and personal transformation.
